WAIRARAPA ALLOCATION

MASTERTON, This Day.
- The Mayor of Masterton (Mr. T. Jordan) has completed the distribution of the sum of £850 received from Lord Nuffield as the allocation to the Wairarapa of a gift of £51,700 to New Zealand charities. Details of the allocation decided upon by Mr. Jordan are as ■"follows: —Mayor of ■ Pahiatua, £40; Plunket oociety,- Pahiatua, £40; Mayor of Eketahuna, £25;' Plunket Society, Eketahuna, ■ £25; Mayor pf Carterton, £25; Salvation Army, Carterton, £25; Plunket Society, Carterton, £50; Mayor of Featherston, £30; Plunket Society, Featherston, £30; Mayor of Greytown, £30; Plunket Society,' Greytown, £30; Maybr of Martinborough, £30; Plunket Society, Martinborough, £30; N.Z. Institute for the Blind (for Wairarapa cases), £50; V.'omen's National Welfare League, Masterton, £25; St. Vincent de Paul Society, Masterton, £50;' Nurse1 M. Hodges (for work amongst Maoris of district), £50; Society for Crippled Children, Masterton (operating throughout Wairarapa), £145; Plunket Society, Masterton, £120.
rent financial year 1478 applicants were tested, of whom 240 were rejected. Of the 240, 26 failed on account of eyesight, but after visiting oculists and obtaining glasses, 23 of them were finally passed. Of the 240, 113 did not return for licences, and what happened to them is not known. Eightyfour of the 240 original rejects passed the second test, 19 the third, and one the fourth.
In the year April 1, 193(5, to March 31, 1937, 2824 applicants were tested, and 475 failed on the first test.
