A HOLIDAY FOR BUILDERS

As the Government has declared a public holiday for Coronation Day, and as public bodies are following suit, thus enabling workers to enjoy this holiday without loss of income, Mr. P. M. Butler, secretary of the National Federation of Labourers, stated today that the general public anticipated that the employers would loyally adhere to this decision. The loss of a day's wages to the builders and general labourers was a serious thing, he said, particularly at this time of the year, when these workers lost so much time through wet weather. He therefore appealed to the employers in these industries to grant this holiday on pay. At the moment these workers did not receive pay for holidays, and he considered that it would be a 'gracious gesture on the occasion of the Coronation for the. employers in this industry to grant this one day without loss of pay. In cases where employers were not prepared to pay for the holiday, Mr. Butler suggested that opportunity should be given to the men to continue working.
