CONSIGNMENT OF BIRDS
Consigned to Mr. J. S. Pullan, a local fancier and dealer, several varieties of exotic birds arrived in Wellington by the Awatea. from Sydney today. The consignment included twelve nightingales,- but eight died on the voyage. The Awatea had a rough passage, and the; nightingales" did not appear : to Stand up to it so well as the other birds, which included' black-headed nuns and tricolour-nuns, and Bengalese, white,- brown, and fawn, from Japan. Among the more colourful birds were nonpareils, from China, there being a dozen of these. Gouldians, from North 'Queensland, .were also attractively, coloured, and other Varieties were diamonds,: double-bars, Sydney wax-bills, and grass, finches.
The birds were mostly fed on Hungarian- millet, .but-: brown maize- and hempseed also contributed towards the diet of some of the species. The birds were under the care of the ship's second butcher, Mr. Kerr.
