BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY
APPEAL FOR SUPPORT
A strong appeal for more support for the Wellington Beautifying Society was made at the opening of the Wellington Horti/:ltural Society's autumn show in the Town Hall this afternoon by the acting president (Mr. J. G. MacKenzie). This societly, he said, while oniy in its infancy,, being not more than three years old, had already done very fine work, not only in the. actual beautifying, it had done in the way of tree planting, etc., but also in stimulating a public interest in the beautifying of Wellington and its surroundings. How far it could go in its work would depend on the measure of support given by the public, Citizens from other centres in the Dominion had censured Wellingtonians for their lack of civic pride. It was to be hoped that that was now a thing of the past. Wellington was a city second to none, and the work of the Beautifying Society, if encouraged, with that of the reserves department of the City Council, would convince every visitor and resident here that Wellingtonians had a real pride in their city, even more so than the people of Auckland, Dunedin,. or Christchurch.
. The annual meeting of the Beautifying Society, Mr. MacKenzie added, would be held next Monday, in the Town Hall, arid, he hoped that the public would show their interest in the work of the society and encourage its members by being present at that meeting. Members of the society were doing a great civic work and putting their hands in their pockets for the common weal. ' '
