OXFORD'S WIN
UNIVERSITY BOAT RACE
FIRST SINCE 1923
BEST RACE FOR YEARS
(United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received March 25, 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, March 24. Oxford Avon the University boat race from Cambridge by three lengths. It was a magnificent race, the best for years. Oxford last won the race in 1923 in 20min 54sec, by thiee-.quarters of a length. Last year Cambridge won by five lengths.
Cambridge had the advantage of the Surrey side. After a false start the boats raced neck and neck. Cambridge were a canvas ahead at Fulham, but the boats were level at Craven Steps. Oxford led by a quarter of a length at the mile post. There was little difference between them at Harr.ods and at the end of two miles. Cambridge were just ahead at Chiswick Eyo't, but Oxford drew level. Oxford
then went out and had a clear lead at Barnes' Bridge. SLOWEST TlfttE SINCE 1877. The time was 22min 39sec, the slowest since 1877. Despite a gruelling race, neither crew was very distressed at the finish. Oxford sat up boldly, flush with their victory, which was hailed with immense enthusiasm. In the greatest out-of-term scene at Oxford for years, supporters performed the victory dance in the streets when the news came through. - It was the first time in the history of Oxford University that the-crew had used swivel rowlocks.
The Cambridge crew averaged 12st sJlb in weight and Oxford 12st 13ilb.'
