'How a young man hid in a car in a garage till the'place was deserted and then entered the office to steal' £1 was revealed in the Magistrate's Court yesterday when-Leslie'John Entwistle appeared to answer three . charges of theft. The first charge was in respect of a pair of trousers stolen from a fel-low-employee of'a taxi firm where he was working, and the second concerned a watch stolen frpm "an employee of another taxi firm.

Entwistle left his home in Christchurch tp follow a speedway career, but met''with'little success, Detective O. Power informed the Court. On account of his connection with the speedway in Palmerstpn North -he was a constant "visitor to'a garage and was given £errnissiori to use '•the .office while he wrote a letter. He saw £8 being counted by-one of the staff and, pretending to leave, dodged back "and hid in a car still 11 o'clock, when the office was deserted. He then went to th 6 drawer where he saw'the money placed, but was disappointed to find only £1 in. small change. . Not satisfied with" that, he forced ' another drawer, butfpund ripthing."' When arrested next morning he'had 16s' 6d in his ppekets, which was refunded.. The accused was 19 years" of age.

Telling the accused that he wpuld get a chance that he really did npt deserve, Mr. J.. L.. Stout,. 5.M.," admitted Entwistle tp two' years' probation.
