IMPORTS AND EXPORTS
LARGE INCREASES SHOWN
Over 35 per cent, of a' total value of £41,672,430 of imports to' Ne w: Zealand, during, the year ended' September 30, 1936, and 23 per, cent, of a Dominion total'of £56,686,762 of exports passed through the port of Wellington, states the annual; report of the general manager and secretary of the Welling-ton-Harbour Board. ..-; ' ; .-■ ■
The total value of ail overseas exports from the port was, from H.M. Customs returns, £13,575,461 (in-cluding-£"21,245 specie), compared with £12,035,427 last year, an increase of £1,539,989. The principal exports were:—Wool, £3,611,218; frozen meat, £2,562,544; butter, £2,403,457; cheese, £2,145,683; skins £583,184; gold-bullion, £466,275; apples, £340,759; sausage casings, £212,158; hide's, £210,693; tallow, £127,136; casein, £103,818; hemp and tow, £56,460; live stock, £54,774; seeds, £49,671; fish, £46,512; pears,, £41,483; grain,. £33,539. . The '• total value of all imports,- including species,' computed in New Zealand currency, was £14,996,395, compared;with £13,285,660.f0r the previous year,.an increase of £1,710,735. From H.M. Customs returns the principal imports were shown.-as-derived-'from the following countries:—United Kingdom, £7538,893; United States of America, £2,473,225; Australia, £1,652,502; Canada, £1,140,275; Japan, £448,196; Dutch East indies,' £417,736; Germany, £240,366; Ceylon, £175,659; : Sweden, £121,040; Belgium, £80,069;. Russia, £80,064; France, £77,375; India, £70,455; South African Union, £57,855; Netherlands, £51,227; Italy, £20,429. The total net register tonnage of trading vessels entering the port during the year ended September 30, 193b (excluding 33,649' tons representing warships, lighters, private yachts, etc.), amounted to 3,910,801/ . which is 120;365 tons greater than last year. For comparison with.those ports combining the' arrivals and: .departures, ; ,the total net register tonnage, of trading vessels that arrived and departed from and to overseas' and coastal -ports the year was-7,581,965.
