FIELDS OF QUALITY

OHINEMURI RACES

TOMORROW'S FORM HORSES

(Special from "Early Bird.")

AUCKLAND, This Day.

The accommodation for racegoers is to be severely tested at Paeroa tomorrow, when the opening day °t u\ e Ohinemuri Jockey. Club's Annual Meeting will be held. The fixture will conclude next Wednesday, St. Patricks Day. This is always a popular meeting, and a record crowd is anticipated. The course was in excellent order yesterday and should be able to stand up to a good rainfall. Win-and-place betting will be in operation. There will be nine races tomorrow, the maiden handicap event being divided, with a win. dividend on each winner and place dividends on the first and second horses. In common with some of the other provincial clubs, the Ohinemuri Cup during the past several years has been contested by rather poor fields in both number .and quality, but this season the position is considerably improved, and now big and good class fields are available. In tomorrow's Cup there are no less than 18 candidates, but the field has a distinct tail, and some of these may make it interesting when they force the pace round the turning course and at least hinder some of the other competitors. With Notium withdrawn from the sprint at midday last Tuesday, there is still a field of 17 remaining in the Paeroa Handicap, and here early speed is very essential, for to have a chance up the straight a horse does not want to have more than four or five in .front of him, despite the fact that the run-in extends for a furlong and a half. It is the sharp bend to the home turn1, on a down grade, that.makes it difficult for the horses at the back, but if a horse is handily placed on the rails at the turn he i.. certain to get a run on the inner.

It is rather unfortunate for trainer A. Cook that his. three, maidens are all in the second division of the Awaiti Handicap. These are Clooneen, Ngakaru, and Lady Meath, and yet he may be lucky, for Royal Passage, on his runaway win last Saturday, looks unbeatable in the first division.

In addition to the Lagoon-Mungatoon bracket in the Ohinemuri Cup there are the following brackets in the Awaiti Handicap:—Susan and Poland. Bryce Street and Clooneen, Cqmetarium and Frances Acre, General Riske and Hopalong, Hutana and Hymel, Le Turc and Llangollen, Malagigi and Mia Acrea. Miriana and Overdue, Requiem and Shoya, Slam and Stormy Weather, and Tralee Rose and Tree of Heaven. In each bracket the second horse named contests the second division. Tomorrow's form horses are:— Karangahake Handicap.—Girl Pat,. Airam, and Land Girl. Handicap Hurdles.—Sandy Dix, Lady Ruler, and English Night. Netherton Hack. —Tosh, Ringshot, and King Theo. Ohinemuri Cup.—Lagoon-Mungatoon bracket, Sinking Fund, and Knight of Australia. Awaiti Maiden.—First division: Royal Passage and Cometarium. Second division: Clooneen and Ngakaru. McGuire Steeplechase.—Don Erma, Irish Comet, and Maunga King. Paeroa Handicap.—Golden Sheila, Galilee, and Triune. Komata Hack.—Jan Ridd,'Orate, and Little Artist, The card is as follows:— 12.0 K'ARAXCAHAKE HANDICAP, £150; two-year-olds; 5 furlongs.
