LAND FOR PARK
PURCHASE PROPOSED
MAKARA COUNCIL'S ATTITUDE
The purchase of a block of 28 acres in the Plimmerton district with a view to its being used as a park was suggested at a meeting of the Makara County Council today by Councillor R. W. Bothamley. He knew, he said, that the land was outside the council's area, but he knew also that the Hutt County Council would subscribe towards its purchase and ac felt sure that the Wellington City Council would do likewise. The land could be bought at what he considered a reasonable price, and it would be of untold value to people of the Wellington district as a park. He moved that the Makara Council agree to contribute the sum of £100 towards its purchase. The chairman, Councillor K. G. Mexted, said that he was prevented from supporting the motion by the knowledge that the parks in the Makara County could be maintained only with difficulty owing to the lack of funds. The parks there were not in proper order, and the council should not contribute anything towards such a project as that put forward by Councillor Bothamley until it was able to take care of its own parks and reserves.
Councillor Bothamley: They are too small; they are useless.
Councillor Windley said that he would support the motion if it were agreed that further information should be supplied before definite action was taken, and Councillor Purchase considered that the council should not bind itself to contribute any stated amount.
It was agreed to seek further information before taking action. ■
