DRAPERS AND HOLIDAYS
The Federation of Drapers, Clothiers, and Boot Retailers will hold its conference in Christchurch the first week in April. It will there be prooo?^ "tb«t the federation make representation to the Government to introduce legislation making all special holidaysChristmas, New Year, and Easter excepted—observable on the Monday of the week in which the holiday would normally fall, and further that such legislation should provide for the standardisation of the bank holidays along the same lines; that the Government be approached with a view to introducing legislation to provide a uniform opening hour for all shops with exception of such trades as butchers and such like who require a specially early opening."
Indicative of the enormous revival now being experienced •by shipbuilding yards and those connected with the ship-building industry, is the fact that the Darlington Forge Company is unable to accept a contract for hull castings for Queen Mary's sister ship, owing to pressure of other work. This company was the first to be offered the contract, since it undertook a similar job for the Queen Mary, and is now to make four large stern tubes for the new vessel. The hull castings will now be supplied by William Beardmore and Co.
