THAT TAITA FINISH

POSITION OF JUDGE'S BOX

The "Star-Sun" comments upon the finish of the Taita Novice Handicap at Hutt Park on Saturday as follows:— "M C. McTigue, driver of Pursuit, said he was certain that his horse beat Queenie Direct, Worthy Audubon, and Mauri McKinney, and was emphatic that Starwyn beat his horse by a neck. One well-known sportsman went to Fraser in the birdcage to congratulate him on Starwyn's . fine performance, and was nearly dumbfounded when he found that the colt had not been placed. It certainly was a hot finish, and the fact of Starwyn finishing on the outside of the course added to the judges difficulties. ■ , . "On courses where the judge's box is placed against the outside fence, many similar happenings have occurred because a horse travelling on the extreme outside does not come within the vision of an official, more especially if he is concentrated on a tight finish among several horses that are racing near the inside fence. For this reason, a number of clubs have erected the judge's box well back from the winning-post, and at an elevation. In fairness to its official, the Wellington Club would do w,ell to make a similar improvement."
