A CAMP FIRE
SOUTH AFRICAN VETERANS
. Veterans of the South African War and their wives gathered around a camp fire on Saturday night in- Stokes Valley, and something of the spirit ot the veldt was recaptured as the men sat around the fire—much brighter, many said, than the.fires they had in South Africa thirty years ago—and sang the songs that they had marched to so long ago. , , ■ The president of the Veterans' Association, Captain. J. J. Clark, had arranged the gathering, which took place on his property. He welcomed Trooper Steele and Sergeant Crichton, both of whom served in the South African War and are going to England with the Coronation contingent. In proposing the toast of Absent Friends," Captain Clark referred to the depletion in the ranks of the veterans during the past thirty years.. "It is well," he said, "that we should remember those with whom we fought and marched, and who have now passed away; we would like to think that they were here. with us." '
