DAVIS CUP
CHANCES DISCUSSED
NORMAN BROOKES'S VIEW
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
AUCKLAND, This Day.
Provided Australia can beat America in the Pacific zone contest, the Commonwealth has a very good chance of winning the Davis Cup, in the opinion of Mr. Norman Brookes, the former Australian and Wimbledon tennis champion, who with his wife and daughter are passengers on vthe Monterey for the Coronation
All depends on the match against the Americans," he said. "Budge is at the top of his form and we cannot expect to win in his singles. Our singles players are yet to be decided. Quist is certain but Crawford is doubtful. McGrath, now the Australian champion, and Bromwich beat Crawford in the championships. Crawford is going back, but there is no reason why he should not recover his form for a while.
Mr. Brookes said that in the European zone Germany was the most probable finalist. They would be difficult to beat. Henkel, who was playing very well, had beaten yon Cramm in tournaments in the South of France. France is the only other country to be considered. Boussus and other young players were showing good form. Mr. Brookes very much doubted if England would hold the Cup now that they had lost Perry.
Councillors W. Appleton and A. Black, who are to represent the Wellington City Council at the annual conference of tne New Zealand Municipal Association at Timaru, are leaving for the South Island tonight. The Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, is unable to attend the conference on account of pressure of duties in Wellington.
