SURF LIFE-SAVING

LYALL BAY AND MARANUI

The trophies were shared equally between the Lyall Bay and Maranui Surf Clubs at the surf life-saving contests at Paekakariki yesterday. Lyall Bay retained the Sanderson Cup, for rescue' and resuscitation by senior teams, and won the Law Rose Bowl, a novice event. -Maranui won the Otaki Shield surf teams race and the Kennedy Cup, the. Wellington march-past championship. \ . • . : As is usual at Paekakariki, the varying drifts along the coast caused trouble. A dead calm in the' earlier morning gave way to a strong south' erly drift, and in the afternoon the current swung to the north.' The day was a cloudy one, with bursts of sunshine. • ■■'"•'■•...' OTAKI SHIELD. ! . Six teams, including two each from Maranui and Lyall Bay, started in the Otaki Shield surf race. The race is a handicap event competed for by teams of six. The course yesterday was about 400 yards in length, from.the beach round two of the buoys and back to the starting point. , Teams are handicapped, instead of individuals, all members of the same team starting off the same- mark, and the first team with four men home wins the shield. ■

Paekakariki went off first, followed twenty seconds later by Worser. Bay and Maranui B. The lead of these teams was nullified by their running into the first of the southerly drift. Most of the swimmers went, right down below .the buoys. Lyall Bay B went off thirty seconds ' later, and ; the scratch teams. Maranui A and Lyall Bay A, ran down the beach ninety seconds after. the limit team.' They profited by the experience of the limit' men, and had little trouble with the strengthening drift. D K. Evans (Maranui A) ' pulled into the lead after rounding the second buoy, and won handily. C. James (Worser Bay) swam into second place, and N. Milligan (Lyall Bay B) was in third. Despite injuries to severar ribs received two days before, J. Clark (Maranui A) occupied fourth place. R. Pelham (Lyall Bay A), holder of the New Zealand individual surf race championship, was fifth. Maranui clinched matters by taking- sixth, and seventh places with G. Cooper and H. C. Downs respectively. Lyall Bay a occupied second place; LAW ROSE BOWL. The drift-was at full strength when the novices entered the arena to contest the Law Rose Bowl. There_were four entries, Paekakariki A' and b, Lyall Bay, and Maranui. The event is a fixed-position one for rescue and resuscitation. The Maranui support gave his team a slight lead, though he had to swim up almost at right angles to his correct course to get to his buoy. A duel between the Maranui and Lyall Bay beltmen followed, in which the Lyall Bay man, who allowed more for the drift, gradually forged ahead. When the Lyall Bay team commenced hauling in, the Maranui beltman still had to swim up about 20 yards. The Maranui line became caught around the ingoing Lyall Bay beltman, with the result that the Maranui man was dragged back and had to give up the contest. Paekakariki B's beltman could not reach his buoy, and though the Paekakariki A man finally picked up his patient, his team was disqualified for exceeding the time limit. Lyall Bay thus was the only team to finish. KENNEDY CUP. The Kennedy Cup championship march-past competition was between four teams. Lyall .Bay,- Paekakariki. Maranui and Worser Bay. ' The result was as follows: —

Maranui (E. B. Hughes, K. F." Hoy, ,1. Whisker. E. A. Raven, H. T. Hawken, P. J. Ballard, C. R.! Menliplay, G, Cooper, H. D. Baird), 1; Lyair Bay, 2; Worser Bay,- 3; Paekakariki, 4. . ;.' :

Maranui A, Lyall Bay C (the New Zealand junior champion team), and Worser Bay contested th« first heat. ■ Evans opened a good *eaci for,Maranui, which Downs in-the belt more than held. The team's land work was sound, but was not of the quality that won it the New Zealand, senior championship. Worser Bay were, second in water work. The Lyall Bay juniors were not far behind, but made several mistakes on the land.

In the second heat, Maranui B drew with Lyall Bay A and ;B. Bell and Pelham. in the water for Lyall Bay A, gamed for that team a good water advantage. Lyall Bay B were second out. Lyall Bay A's work was good, and was carried out without hesitanc".
