KEEN COMPETITION

LOCAL CHAMPIONS

WILSON'S GOOD MILE

It was unfortunate that, though the weather conditions were excellent for the Wellington provincial track and field championships held at the Basin Reserve on Saturday, the track should have been very heavy. This made anything in the nature of really fast times out of the question, but nevertheless there were some very good performances and also several surprises. Spirited competition, efficient control, and excellent starting all contributed towards a successful day's sport.

-The 100 yards produced the keenest I finish of the day. There were only I inches between C. Robinson, A. Welply, and W. Redpath. Welply, running better now than he has ever i before during his ten years on the track, was in the lead at 75 yards, but Robinson, always a slow starter, pegged him back over the last stages to. get the decision on the tape. Redpath, too, came with a burst over the final 30' yards to run his best race this season. V. -Walker, a former Auckland champion, who defeated Welply in his heat, did not produce the same dash in Ihe final and was a comparatively poor fourth. Actually, the standard of the sprinting in the short dash did not impress; it was the finish that made the race.

Something rather better,' however, j was produced in the 220 yards by the title-holder, Robinson. His time, 22 4-5 | sec, was very fair going and represent-1 cd a personal track record. He won going away by two yards from J. M. Watt and Welply, who had a great tussle for second place. ♦NO OPPOSITION. Watt had no ; opposition in the quarter-mile and won just as he liked in 52 l-ssec. He could have clipped probably a second from his time had he been pressed, but he still requires a week or so of solid work. ,

. The defeat of W. Ogg In the halfmile was probably a surprise to many people, but the winner, L. S. Black, and the second man, T. McCashin, both gave an indication a week ago that they might turn the tables on Ogg in the provincial championship race. Ogg ran well, but he is not the runner he was a year or two ago. He has never had a sprint finish, but hd closed up very quickly after-holding the lead when turning for home. In the old days he would have staved off his challengers. Black, who got home by a long yard from McCashin and R. Hurst, of Nelson, both of whom passed Ogg in the last ten yards, -is a definitely improving half-miler.

Any doubt that A. R. Wilson was not in his best form was set at rest by his effort in the mile. He won by some 60 yards in 4min 25sec, which was just about the best performance of the day. He could have ,done 4min 23sec, or even better, if he had made up his mind to run from the gun. His first two laps were too slow for a runner of his ability. He should be good for 4min 2Psec at least-in Auckland. Hardly, less impressive' was the performance of A. J. Mackay in the three miles. Ho won handsomely. in 15min 9sec, really good time for the track. Mackay has made a marked improvement this season, and should do' even better in the future. No Wellingtonbred athlete has bettered his time, and he has thoroughly earned a trip to Auckland, where he is certain to perform well.. J. Riddington, '" running better today than in the past, went a plucky race."- For nine laps he was right up with'Mackay, but drifted over the last thr'efr'quarters of a mile, when the winner clapped oh the pace to win by a good 60 yards, NOT IMPRESSIVE. The standard of*performance among the hurdlers,,was ,rathe.r poor. There h no - first-class man in' Wellington. C. Hauseman ">(Masterton),j ■ a '• useful sprinter; surprisingly defeated J. .McDonald in the high hurdles'by'a yard in the slowtime of 17 l-ssec, -andH. Abraham ran up to form by capturing the 220 yards and the 440 yards events with just ordinary time, performances. ' The field- events standard, r too, was unimpressive: T. J. Crowe, the, national high-jump champion, whose form has been very mediocre this season, could do no belter, than sft ' 7in (an effort upon which he will have to improve considerably -if he is to retain his New Zealand title), though his 2Jit Biin in tfie^roaid jump was quite good. R. Carter's 44ft jn the hop, step, and jump was fair, but .the efforts with'the discus, javelin,1 and.hammer were scarcely of New Zealand championship calibre. K. Guy may win the national shot put title, but he might have to exceed his Saturday's, effort of 40ft Bin. ~ • SURPRISE OF THE DAT. The greatest surprise of'the day;was the clear-cut win of Miss J. Crampton over the previous champion, Miss A. Gibbs, in the women's 100 yards..Miss Gibbs has not been showing the dash she did last season, and' Miss Crampton is an improving runner, but few people could have anticipated the ease of her .wins in both the championship and the handicap event. J. Sutherland ran right up to expectations in the junior sprints, winning with ridiculous ease. The youthful Waitaki Boys' High School sprinter is returning to college, and if he develops along the right lines should make- his mark in open competition. The McVilly Shield for inter-club competition was retained by the Wellington Club, the points being as follows:—Wellington 89, University 29, Combined Old Boys 23J. A similar competition among the country clubs, also for the McVilly Shield, resulted: —Masterton 45 points. Nelson 28 points, Marlborough 9 points, The award of points in the grand parade for the/A: C. Kilto shield was Kiwi 83|, Wellington 81J, Combined Old' Boys 80, University 55. THE RESULTS.
