OPENING TOMORROW
Rotarians from overseas and from all parts of New Zealand will assemble in the Town Hall tomorrow morning for' the official opening of the sixth Pacific regional conference of Rotary International—the first' conference of its kind to be held in New Zealand. Proceedings at this conference will last until Thursday, and on Friday the fifteenth district conference will take place. ..,.-. Delegates and their wives have been arriving, in Wellington for some days now, and more than 600 persons are expected to.take part,in the main conference. A fairly full business programme has been drawn up, and elaborate arrangements have been made for the entertainment of the delegates on the social side. . This afternoon the .preliminary task of registering the visitors took place at the-Town-'Hall.'-' There are about forty delegates from overseas, representing Australia, Canada, Japan, Dutch East Indies, Hawaii, China, and Manila. The-recent shipping: strike in America caused the cancellation of the visit of, the .Pacific Coast delegation Ijom the United States. The conference chairman will be District Governor Will Thomas, of Timaru. He will have the assistance of the following officers:—Conference committee, Rotarians J. M. A. Ilott (chairman), H. E. Anderson (president of the host club), F.. Campbell, R. Telford, A. F. Roberts, W. Gray Young; conference treasurer, Rotarian W. H. Nankervis; conference secretary, Rotarian E. G. Harper; assistant conference secretary, Miss F. M. Low; conference sergeant-at-arms and song-leader, Rotarian Harison Cook. The following are the conveners of the various committees: —Decorations, Rotarian R. Gray Young; entertainment, Rotarian W H. Hindle; finance, Rotarian D. A. Ewen; hotel, Rotarian F. R. Jones; information, Rotarian R. Telford; programme, Rotarian J. M. A. Ilott; publicity, Rotarian L. J. Greenberg; reception Rotarian J. E. L. Baldwin; registration, Rotarian L. T. Watkins; transport, Rotarian H. Taylor; ladies, Mrs. H.E. Anderson. .' After the official opening tomorrow; morning, the conference will adjourn for the afternoon, when the real business will commence. It will open with an address by the District Governor. Tomorrow morning there will be an address by. Dr. J. Inglis Robertson on '"International Understanding Through International Contacts," and an address by Rotarian Nomura, of the Tokio Club. In the afternoon addresses will be given by Professor R. W. Souter, of Dunedin, and by Rotarian .E: Hitchcock, of Christchurch. After addresses by Rotarian F. HallJones, of Invercargill, and Rotarian Roy Banks, of Honolulu, on Thursday, delegates will be the guests of the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) at morning- tea at Parliament Buildings. Rotarian Frank Milner, of Oamaru, and Rotarian Dr. Leonard Mitchell,' of- Melbourne, will give addresses, and the conference ball will take place in the evening at the Town Hall. ■•'■■■ .■:'.'• On Friday morning there will be an address by Rotarian Professor J. Shelley and the closing address by Rotarian. J. M. A. Ilott followed by a farewell to overseas delegates. A special service; for visiting rotariarii:;was held-last'-evening' iri' the Terrace Congregational Church, and about 250 rotarians and their wives attended.. The first lesson was read by Rotarian Will Thomas, District Governor, and the second by Rotarian H. E. Anderson, president of the Wellington Club.' The Rev. W. H. Newell preached the sermon, and Mr. A. Brusey was organist arid choirmaster. ■ This evening- an -informal gathering will be held at'the National Art Gallery to enable visitors 4o become acquainted. In "The Post" of February 22 it was stated that Dr. K. S. Inui, a Japanese, was requested to represent the Rotary Clubs of China at the Rotary Conference opening in Wellington tomorrow. We are informed that this is incorrect, but that Dr. Inui will represent the Shanghai Rotary Club, the members of which embrace the people of nineteen different- nations.
