TURF NEWS IN BRIEF

Weights for the first day of the Wellington Meeting are due on Monday. The Chokebore Lodge stable thmks more of Haughty Winner than it does of Night Dress. Ben Braggie's spell has evidently been short, as he is entered for the sprints at the Wellington Meeting. Without a rehandicap for his Waikato win, Debham may again be the hard one to beat at Te Aroha tomorrow. The Australian Jockey Club committee decided recently to experiment with a late start for racing at Randwick. The early starting times, however, will be adhered to this season. Flying Chief, handicapped on the minimum in the near-maiden class at Te Aroha tomorrow, is one of the horses remaining in the New Zealand St. Leger field. m . , Riding engagements for the Te Aroha Jockey Club's Meeting tomorrow include: R. E. Home, Loornbination. tt.illadar. Fox Moth, Royal Vaals; C. G. Goulsbro'. Galilee, Debham, Jonathan, Lady Siegfried, Huntingmor.e. Kindheart was reported hopelessly amiss, but he has been left in the St. Leger field and withdrawn from the I North Island Challenge Stakes, which indicates that his presence- in the St. Leger is no oversight. Opunake riding engagements announced include:-C. Cole, •Corowa (twice), Gaily, Autumn Leaf, and Dancing Lady; B. H. Morris, Ned Cuttle and Kia Ora; S. Hawkes, Valroy, Running Shoes, and St. Cedric; G. Tattersall, Fafner; A. Jenkins, Gaystep; L. Monkley Lickem; W. Grindjay, King Pluto; K. Chote, Naughty Marietta (twice). Spiral's name among the open sprinters at the Wellington Meeting is interesting, as it was at this department that he came back to form early last season after he had been disappointing in distance races. It looks as if he is to tackle the sprint the first day at Trenth am and the distance race the' final day. , Padishah, after five weeks in the paddock, is to go through.a thorough preparation for winter racing, says a Hastings report. Included in his programme will be the Great Northern Hurdles and Steeple's. This halfbrother to Cuddle has not raced over the fences, but he has done far more schooling than many who have contested a dozen jumping races, and he has shown particular promise. The same stable produced Kohu to win the Great Northern Hurdles 13 years ago.
