FIELDS OF MIXED SIZE

Some of the fields will be small at the Opunake Racing Club's Annual Meeting at Pihama tomorrow, but Taranaki sportsmen are enthusiastic at present, and a successful fixture promises to bo the result, if satisfactory weather is experienced. The card comprises mainly district horses, with the addition of two or three visitors from the Auckland Province who arc still in Taranaki.

The betting at Opunake is under the single-pool system, the club, with its usually small fields, having always kept to this mode.

The Opunake Cup has drawn a useful field of eight this year, a better acceptance than last year. Friesland, with 8.11, of course stands out on recent form, but Tahurangi is an improver who might be troublesome if the topweight shows any weakening, and Bantry, Corowa, and Red Sand are hacks who have recently been in winning form. Last year's winner, Windsoreen, is also engaged again, but she has shown little form this season, nor has the formerly useful Davistock. The favourite for the Flying Handicap will probably be the topweight, Lady Kyra, who was the winner twelve months ago. She has been missing from fields on the recent circuit owing to having received leg injuries at the Wellington Meeting last month, but she is reported to have made a complete recovery. The Tiger, Erebus, and Cheval de Volee are speed merchants who may also play a part in the finish. ■ , The other fields have not attracted a very good class of horse. Bazaine will have to remain in the hurdles for a three-horse race, and he may still find Don Erma too solid for him. In the hack and maiden events, excepting the distance heat, there are numerous fields but very little form of account. The following horses may be fancied:— Patiki Hurdles.—Don Erma. Maiden Race.—Kentucky Song and GsVStGTD Flying Handicap.—Lady Kyra and The Tiger Electric Hack Handicap—Serviette and Colleen Gain. , Opunake Cup—Friesland and Tahurap?esident's Hack Handicap—Bonny Railway Hack Handicap.—Eara and Ned Cuttle. _ The card is:—
