On Sunday last the northern Tararua Range was crossed from Levin to Masterton, via Mounts Pukehatawai., Girdlestone, and Holdsworth. by Messrs. L. D. Bridge and A. H. Hines, of Wellington,. in the record time of 14 hours 25 minutes. The previous record for the trip was established on March 5 and 6, 1932, by Messrs. G. B. Wilson, D. T. Sinclair, and A. 11. Hines, when they made the crossing in 16 hours 54 minutes, leaving the Levin pipe bridge at 9.55 p.m. on Saturday and arriving at Bannister Hut on the Masterton side of the range at 2.49 p.m. on Sunday.
Several weekend crossings have been made of the range, but these two attempts ■ are the only two recorded crossings right along the top of the range to Holdsworth. This route, which covers the whole of the open tussock range south of Arete, is the main crossing and is two hours longer than crossing via Mitre and the Waingawa River.
