MR. SAVAGE AS STARTER

The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, was on the starter s platform for the start of the Eclipse Handicap at New Brighton on Saturday, and had a close-up view of a big field being prepared. Later Mr. Savage was welcomed to the owners' and trainers stand, from which he watched the running of the Flying Handicap. In reply to the welcome by Mr. T. G. Fox, president of the Canterbury Owners and Breeders' Association, Mr. Savage complimented the men on the part they were playing in the sport of trotting. He said the foundation of trotting was with owners,, breeders, trainers, and horsemen, and from end to end each had a man's job to do. He had had his first experience of the start of a race, and he said it was an eyeopener to him to see the way the starter, Mr. A. J. Hastings, controlled a big field of horses. Under his direction the business of getting the field ready for starting was done with clockwork smoothness, and he marvelled at the control that one man could exer r cisc over such a field as he had seen in action. He had thoroughly enjoyed his day's racing, although financially he had not benefited.
