IN EVENT OF WAR

DOMINIONS' RIGHT

DECISION ON NEUTRALITY

PROBABLE EFFECTS

(Received February 24, 11.20-a.m.)]

LONDON, February 23

The political correspondent of ths Australian Associated Press agency understands that the defence discussions at the Imperial Conference will be dominated by the situation which is likely to arise in the event of Britain going to war. The right of the Dominions to decide regarding neutrality is fully recognised here, but nevertheless defence experts are of opinion that if Britain is at war any declaration of neutrality by any Dominion would not ensure that such neutrality would be respected. On die other hand, it is firmly believed that in the event of Britain being involved an enemy would not respect ships bringing essential foodstuffs from the Dominions to Britain any more than it would respect British ships. Being vitally dependent on the Dominions, Britain would be compelled to protect her ships from tha Dominions, whether or not the Dominions were neutral.

It is generally expected that the Imperial Conference will open on May 18, as soon as possible after the Coronation. The formal opening will bt made by the British Prime Minister, Mr. Stanley Baldwin, who will becomt chairman. ..'•■■■
