STATE HOUSE DESIGNS

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —After looking over the designs for the State houses for the Hutt Valley in Friday's "Evening Post," from the point of view of practical housekeeping, I would like to ask a few questions. These six approved designs will represent a great many homes, and these homes are to house families. Why, therefore, are there " in each house only two bedrooms? Unless there is a sunporch to utilise, two bedrooms are inadequate for. a family's sleeping requirements. In four of the designs published the laundry is in the centre of the house. It is ideal to have bedrooms where noise does riot easily penetrate and it is unthinkable that a mother should have 'to tip-toe about the laundry while her infant takes his morning nap on the other side of a thin partition. In the fourth' design depicted there is much in its iavour. Even in this the bathroom door is directly opposite the front entrance, and the only access to the sunroom is through No. 1 bedroom 'neither of which is necessary. I anr sure those responsible would be quite ready, to remedy any defects in the designs which would result in discomfort and inconvenience to prospective occupiers.—l am, etc.,

UTILITY.
