COST OF KILLING SHEEP

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —During the course of his address at Martinborough last night, as reported in tonight's "Post," the Hon. A. Hamilton in referring to the recent freezing dispute, said that:—"The increase given by the Minister of 3d per hour means an increase of from 6d to 7d per sheep," Any farmer should see the absurdity in such a statement. For some years I worked on sheep farms, and one of my duties was the killing of the sheep once a week or so. Not being an experienced butcher it used to take me about a quarter of an hour to kill, skin, and dress the carcass, at the rate of cbout four an hour, which, at 3d per hour means 3d per sheep. So that where sheep are killed at the rate of from 10 to 15 per hour per man, it can hardly work out at the mysterious figures as quoted above. — I am, etc., NOT A BUTCHER. February 16.
