TO GROW LEEKS

METHOD OF CULTIVATION

Good leeks can only tie obtained by the most generous treatment. A light, well-manured soil, deeply dug is the first essential. The ground must be well pulverised to a full spade's depth. The easiest and generally a very successful way to grow- leeks is to make holes one foot apart in rows and to drop the young plant in. The holes should be about 8 inches deep. Do not attempt to fill in the soil but as soon as the planting is done give a good hosing. This washes sufficient soil into the holes to cover the roots and subsequent waterings will continue the' good work, blanching ihe stems at the same time. The ground should be frequently hoed to keep down weeds and keep the surface open. If desired earthing up may be done in the latter stages of growth.
