HEDGEHOGS RAID BIRDS

Hedgehogs are reported to have increased in number in the King Country recently and the toll they take of bird life is causing concern. It is said that even the fierce defence of the pheasant does not always safeguard eggs and chicks from nocturnal attack. One who was content to believe that the hedgehog existed on slugs and other garden pests was rudely disillusioned when investigating a disturb^ ance in his fowlhouse, where he found a fully-fledged chicken being carried off by a hedgehog.
