KAIKORAI HELD UP
CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS
As the result of a Christmas "slebration among a section of the crew of the Union Company's steamer Kaikorai, the vessel has been held up in Wellington. She was due to leave Wellington on Thursday morning for Napier to continue the discharge of her cargo of steel, hardwood, timber, and coal from Newcastle and Sydney, but a number of the crew expressed a desire to remain in Wellington over Christmas.
A majority of the crew were in favour of remaining in port, but they were persuaded by union officials to take the steamer to sea. They agreed to abide by the union's decision, but when the sailing time arrived a number of the men could not be found. The whole crew were then dismissed, and the Kaikorai is now laid up. A new crew will probably be engaged in time for her to sail next week.
