PRESIDENT OUSTED
A CHANCE IN CUBA
HAVANA^ December 24,
President Gomez was ousted by the Senate by a vote of 22 to 12, and the Vice-President, Senor Federico Laredo Bru, automatically became President.
Senor Gomez issued a manifesto to ■the people stating that the impeachment was highly unjust. It was a victory for the military forces, which were determined to control the country.
The impeachment of President Gomez followed his vetoing of the Sugar Tax Bill, which was designed to produce 2,000,000 dollars annually for the support of rural schools. Following the veto the House of Representatives decided to impeach the President, and the Senate, met as a court of justice, and, after installing the Chief Justice as president of the Senatorial Court, adjourned for 24 hours to permit President Gomez to prepare his defence. •
