In their winning efforts to date, Vain Lad and Swordsman, who will be bracketed in the Selby Handicap, have given evidence of being something a good deal above the average. Of the limit horses the most consistent has been Baby Triumph, a solid sort Bingen Sun is another of the handicapped division who will have plenty of friends, but the fayourites should be the Swordsman—Vain Lad bracket and Baby Triumph. She was prominent for more than a mile in the Riccarton Stakes, which was nearly up to Derby class* Northern form favours the chances of Kia !Kaha and Frank Best, and the, distance will suit . the latter: Musketeer is a Great Northern Derby candidate iri F. He does not race a great deal, but is really promising up to a mile and a half. Tollgate has been consistent at the same distance, and Cherrill, General Sarsfield, and Winaway should still have something in front of them. Even allowing for the improvement Red Shadow is reported to have made, Grand Mogul should beat him on Louisson Handicap form. - Rey Spec has come into favour as a result of good track work, and Aucklanders are rallying to the standard of King's Warrior, whose form has ( been well up to Cup calibre. Bonny Azure is a brilliant pacer on grass tracks, but she lost caste at Forbury Park. She will be bracketed with Glenrossie, whose 4min 16 3-ssec stands as the fastest record of the field. Smooger and Auto Machine will be at long odds, but Bingen Palm is not without prospects. Graham Direct, last year's winner, will be judged on his showing in the Ashburton Cup today. J. Smith's candidate may continue the good work in the Christmas Handicap. Hot Point, second to Levity at his last start, looks likely to be thereabouts again, and the chances of Charteris Bay, Nawton Parrish, Royal Jewel, and Baron Grand will also be considered. Great Admiral will be bracketed With Te Kahu.:' Bittersweet, who has won her last three races, has only to stay to have too much speed for the majority. Corrianda, Sail Michele, and Franz Derby are others worthy of respect. Many will prefer the Great Admiral-Te Kahu bracket, Bittersweet, and San Michele.
