REPORTED LANDING

HELP FOR THE REBELS

FORCE. OF 6000

BERLIN "KNOWS NOTHING"

I (United I'icss Association—By .Electric Telegraph—Copyright. : (Received December 2, 11 a.m.) : LONDON, December 1. rllie correspondent of the British United Press agency at Gibraltar says that there arc persislcnl rumours that 6000 Germans, mostly engineers and trench specialists, were landed at Cadiz from a German transport which was escorted by two destroyers. The "News Chronicle" features a story that the British Government is aware that German troops were landed at Cadiz, more than 2000 of whom are going to Madrid to help General Franco to batter down the capital. In view of the seriousness of the statement the Associated Press agency sought verification in official quarters, to which it has been reported that considerable numbers of Germans have reached Spain, but they do not go so far as to describe them as troops. The Associated Press agency gathers that if the present investigations reveal that they are troops Britain will seriously j deplore the fact. It is pointed out that I the question of personnel is outside the scope of the Non-intervention Committee, which is concerned only with materials, but the matter of troops is likely to be raised at a special meeting of the League Council on December 10. The Barcelona correspondent of "The Times" records the arrival there of several hundreds of Frenchmen, Germans, Italians. Hungarians, Austrians, Belgians, and Poles to help the Government on the Madrid front. The Foreign Office at Berlin says it is hardly worth denying the stories and that it knows nothing, of such troops.
