A BIG BATTLE
NORTH-WEST OF MADRID
APPARENT REBEL ENCIRCLING MOVEMENT
(Received December 2, 11.35 a.m.) LONDON, December 1. The biggest battle since the siege of Madrid is progressing on the north-west front, accompanied by an all-night terrific artillery duel. The rebels presumably are attempting an encirclement movement. The Government claims to have made a considerable advance towards the rebel headquarters at Burgos. It is reported from Barcelona that William, son of Sir Charles Belcher, 1 Chief Justice of Trinidad, has gone to the Catalonian front as a Government photographer. Lately he has been over, most of the Aragon front, where he says the troops are splendidly fed. Belcher, who was an eye-witness,' confirmed the death from machine-gun wounds of the Australian trade union leader William Barry while leading a Government attack. A report from Valencia states that the Cortes passed a unanimous vote of confidence in the Government.
