MCKENZIE BATHS LOAN
The reserves committee of the Petone Borough Council recommended last evening that the McKenzie Baths loan proposal for £1500 be reduced to £750. The Loans Board has already given permission for the holding of the poll. The reason for wanting to reduce the loan was that a new grandstand on the recreation ground was contemplated, and the timber from the present grandstand could be used at the McKenzie Baths.
Councillor D. M. Dickson complained that this proposal had not been given enough thought by the council. He considered that the timber in ths grandstand was not worth £750. Councillor A. M. Macfarlane said that the present grandstand was not worthy to be placed at the McKenzie Baths. The committee wanted to save money oa this proposal for use in another direction.
The chairman of the reserves committee (Councillor G. London) said that the engineer had reported that there was plenty of good timber in the grandstand. The Mayor (Mr. A. Scholefield) said the reason for the reduction was that the ratepayers would probably not pass .the amount of £1500, but would more probably pass £750. Various councillors spoke in favour 8f the committee's recommendation, but the clause was referred back for further consideration.
