NO CORRECTIVE SUGGESTED

MATTER FOR VARIOUS

GOVERNMENTS

(Received October 23, 9 a.m.)

LONDON, October 22,

The Imperial Shipping Committee'! report is a voluminous document. It is understood that it confirms the serious difficulties of British shipping in, the Pacific, but avoids the question of corrective policy, which is a matter for the various Governments concerned. , . Although the report has passed out of the committee's hands, it is still only in draft form and ay/aits the observations of the Government representatives. It has not yet been signed. TASMAN COMPETITION NOT DISCUSSED. The Australian Associated: Press Agency learns that the Imperial Shippin? Committee kept strictly within the terms of the order of reference and did not even discuss, far les# recommend, restrictions to protect : British shipping in the Tasman Sea. It would not be surprising to find, the agency states, that the question of subsidies has been left to the Governments, the feeling' being that British shipping- is strongly individualistic and likes to stand on its own feet. It has shown ingenuity in the past in devising- its own methods of meeting competition. Restriction in the Tasman Sea has never been, a burning question, as American lines carry a very small fraction of the traffic between Australia and New Zealand. The New Zealand Protection of British Shipping: Bill thus is not direct* ly inspired by the Imperial Shipping Committee's report.
