NEW EMPIRE FLYING-BOAT
TOP SPEED NEARLY

LONDON, October 22.
The airworthiness certificate for the new-class of Empire flying-boa| is reported to show a top speed of just under: 200 miles an hour,"^saj§ "The Times." It is thus easily the world's fastest commercial flying-boat.
The performance of the flying-boat has greatly exceeded the figures stipulated in the contract The fuel consumption is also much below expectations. \ The Canopus, the first of the new 17J-ton Imperial Airways flying-boats for service on Empire air routes, will leave Rochester, Kent, today, for the Mediterranean.
The fleet under construction comprises ,28 of these liners, and next year they will be used for the operation of the British Government airmail scheme by which letters will be carried to India, Australia, and Africa. The Ganopus is 1 the first commercial aircraft to have twin decks. Her height above the water is 29ft. The remaining liners of this class are likely to be delivered from the works at the rate of one per month.
