REBEL ADVANCE
STREETS STREWN WITH DEAD
United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received October 23, 11 a.m.) LONDON, October 22. The "Daily Mail's" special correspondent says that the rebels captured Navalcarnero, 18' miles southwest of Madrid, after an all-day battle in which the insurgents advanced six and a half miles. ■ The slaughter at Navalcarnero is reported to have been colossal, the streets being strewn with dead. The correspondent of "The Times" on the frontier says that General Franco is already planning his campaign to followHhe capture of Madrid. The insurgents expect the Government forces to retreat to Catalonia and make their last stand there in defence of a newly-proclaimed independent Republic with Barcelona as its capital. PRESIDENT MOVES TO BARCELONA. A message from Barcelona states that the Spanish President (Senor Azana) and his staff have arrived from Madrid and taken'Up quarters near the Catalan Parliament Buildings. Senora Azana, the President's wife, has arrived in Paris by air from Barcelona. Several people were killed when the international quarter in Bilbao was bombed by. a rebel aeroplane. A bomb fell near the British destroyer Esk, but did no damage. TRADE UNION SOLDIERS. The trade unions in Madrid have called up all adherents between the ages of 18 and 40 years, and placed them at the disposal of Senor Caballero. As a result of frenzied exhortations by women to sluggard men to join the colours, a considerable number of men have begun drilling at dawn. A message from Hendaye states that three squadrons of insurgent aircraft bombed the northern station at Madrid and also flew over ... entrenchments which are being built outside Madrid.
