LAND TAXATION

FIVE-FOLD INCREASE

A firm of public accountants has drawn the particular attention of the trustees of a Wellington estate to the increase in. land tax as it will affect the estate. The increase is five times greater than. it was last year. ' The estate includes suburban land, some of which has not earned the rates paid up on it and for which there is no market.

A representative of "The Post" was informed that for some yearsi past this estate as a whole has barely earned the rates and taxes levied upon it. The land tax alone last year was £140, but this has now been raised to £700. These figures are approximately correct, but even so' they serve to illustrate the point. It is reported that city and suburban properties generally have been similarly dealt with and that land taxation is now fast approaching a critical stage.
