FIVE-DAY WEEK
OIL OFFICE WORKERS
IMMEDIATE OPERATION
The secretary of the Wellington Oil Offices Employees' Society (Mr. G. H. Ponder) stated today that as> a result of negotiations with the managements of the major oil companies an amicable arrangement had been arrived at whereby all sections of the society would commence a five-day working week immediately. The staffs would commence duty at 8.30 a.m. instead of 9 a.m. This privilege. would extend throughout the major oil offices in the Dominion. ' 1 ' ■
It was stated that whilst the official name of fhe society at present is the Wellington Oil Offices Employees' Sociey, in actual fact it is now organised throughout New Zealand, The society- has applied for registration as a Dominion-wide organisation and the granting of the application has j been deferred by the Minister of Labour (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong) pending the' result of an appeal lodged before the Arbitration Court against the nongranting of registration as a union pf the Wellington* section of the society.
Notice, it was stated, has also been received from the' Conciliation Commissioner (Mr. M..J. Rear don) recognising; the protest made by. the society and lodged with'him against the major oil companies being cited in the proposed award of the Wellington. Clerical Workers'. Union.-•: The society has been granted permission to submit the protest to the Arbitration Court'proceedings ..at which the Wellington Clerical Workers' Union applies -for its award. It is expected that both these cases will be heard shortly. .
