Wahnpoka gave a pleasing display of trotting when he easily won the Trist and Small Handicap at the Char* ity Meeting at Addington. He trotted the two miles in 4min 33sec from a 4min 43sec mark, a fine performance. He now appears to be a solid and reliable trotter.
Colleen Wrack, a.winner at Washdyke, has raced on several occasions, and is now trained in South Canterbury by H. J. Smith. She is by Wrack from Erin's Isle, the dam of Encounter, who was a good and'game mare up to a point, * Civic is another winner from Erin's Isle.
' Starwyn was very slow to begin at Washdyke; in fact, at one stage of the race he .was a hundred yards behind the leaders, says a Christchurch writer; Then, he unwound a fine burst and got to within three lengths of the winner. He is a stylish colt, and when he becomes accustomed to racing he will win several prizes. The Riccarton Stakes, for three-year-olds that have not won a race, will be'decided on the opening day of the Metropolitan Meeting, and included -in the number nominated are several that will later race in the New Zealand Derby. The Yaldhurst trainer, M. B. Edwards, has a particularly strong team in Frisco Boy, Twenty Grand, Philario, and Zincali—all promising young pacers. Others engaged include Loyal Pat and Jano Worthy from G. McKendry's stable, and Becky Direct, all of whom have shown useful form.
