UPPER HUTT LOANS

SUPPORT FOR ONE

KERBING AND CHANNELLING

Until a late hour last -.night -the Upper Hutt Borough Council considered the loan proposals brought forward by the Mayor (Mr. A, J. McCurdy).: It was decided that only one loan,.that of £6000 for twenty-five miles pf-kerbin'g and channelling, should be/given the council's support. •■.■•. ;, -.■■■■- ■-■■• . The Mayor said- that if all the" loans went before the ratepayers they would have the opportunity of accepting, .or rejecting'them. : ' ' : ■ The proposal to borrow £500 for concrete fire stations at' Upper Hutt. and Silverstream was held overspending a report from Mr. Girling Butcher, Govr ernment Inspector of Fire Brigades. • When Mr. McCurdy moved that Maidstone Park be purchased, Councillor W. Grieg moved as an amendment that consideration should be given to the purchase of the park in twenty months' time. He was in favour of the purchase of the park, he said, but he did not think the present time, was opportune. ■; ■'~•■ lii seconding the amendment, Councillor A. -Howell "said that .a promise was made by a previous council that Barton's Bush would be purchased. He would advise the ratepayers ■in the west ward,to vote against the purchase of Maidstone Park unless Barton's Bush was included in the loan proposal. The amendment was carried, only the Mayor voting against it. Strong opposition was made by councillors to the Mayor's proposal that two storage reservoirs should be con» structed. , ■ ; Opinions were expressed that two r<?T servoirs were not needed, and the water could be pumped direct from an artesian supply into the main. Councillor J. Blewman advocated a storage tank at Silverstream. Councillor J. Purvis stated that the; water pump in the lower part of.the Hutt Valley was very^satisfactory. Ke considered that storage reservoirs were an unnecessary expense. The motion that two storage reservoirs be erected at accost of £2000 was withdrawn until further advice was received on the possibilities of pqmping. The New Zealand Railways Road Service advertise in this issue their omnibus services from Wellington, Petone, and Lower Hutt to Trentham racecourse for the Spring Meeting of the Wellington Racing Club.
