WICKETS FOR CRICKET

CONCERN ABOUT BOYS

Increases have been • made by the City Council in the charges for wickets used in giving boys opportunities to develop as young cricketers, and-not a little* dissatisfaction is being expressed by those who have been interesting themselves in cricket for the boys. The charges to the -Wellington Boys' Cricket Association for wickets are: At Prince of Wales Park, 10s each; afternoon wickets elsewhere; 7s 6d each; morning wickets, 5s each. Last feason the charge for afternoon wickets was 6s and for morning wickets it was

2s. It is reported also that the charge for wickets for Wellington Cricket Association' third grade matches had been increased from 15s to £1. The Wellington Women's Cricket Association | is also disturbed over the charge of i 10s for each'of its "w'iclcets, considering the grounds on -which the wickets are situated, the allocation including three wickets at the Polo Ground. "This is a nice way lor the City Fathers to encourage boys to occupy spare time to good advantage -in healthy recreation," remarked a prominent member of an organisation taking a particular interest in the welfare of boys. "We do our best to bring the boy.c to the playing fields, where the organised sport provided for them makes them far better off than in bejng left, to fend for themselves, and, when we do this, we now find that our interest in the boys is met with what amounts to a show of disapproval. The attitude seems to be that .if the boys want to play their cricket on the city playing areas they have to pay for it., and. pay dearly go far «s; they arc concerned. The increased charges do seem to be 'over the fence.'"
