ON TRENTHAM TRACKS

WELLINGTON TRIALS

THIS MORNING'S GALLOPING

(By "Rangatira.")

Although quite a number of visiting teams are now on hand for the Wellington Meeting, there was surprisingly little fast work at Trentharh this morning, and the galloping was more "or less devoid of instructive value; Rain threatened at dawn, but though it fell lower down the Valley it missed Trentham and the weather became fine and muggy after the breakfast interval. Pace work was. done on the plough, and faster work on the outside of the trial grass, which is in splendid order after having been closed since early in the year.

The only additional horses noticed on the scene were Hunting Cat, Ben Braggie, Charade, and Screen Star (J. H. Jefferd), Sardius (V. H. Colello), Greenwich and Aureus (A..E. Neale), and.Rona Bay (owner).: Charade.and Screen Star will not be racing till the later days. '■.'■■■'■'

H. Cutts did not require much froml his team. Paper Slipper, however. Came home from the half-mile on the plough in 49sec. Wild ■Chase,- whose knee still looks doubtful, required> 55 see, and Trench Fight was never much abov° half-pace. Counterblast and Card Player came down the straight together, and Guinea Fowl and Lazybones did a similar task.

Shy (R. W. Savage), Might (S. ■ Wilson}", and Korero (S..R. Farland) were associated over a mile. After, reaching the half-mile together, Shy went out to a two lengths' lead, and he swung along pleasingly down the straight to a length ahead of the other pair at the post. They ran the mile in lmin 44 l-ssec, the last half in 52 4-5 sec. -■'.'■■•■

Sporting Song (Savage) finished five lengths ahead of Verden (J. Nicolson) after running a mile in lmin 45 3-ssec, the last half in 54 2-ssec. They went fast over the first half, and Sporting Seng's effort was a good one for a hurdler. , ,

Deficit (Wilson) moved up in the last furlong to be on terms with Omarere (Farlan.') at the end of seven furlongs in lmin 31 2-ssec,- the last half-mile- in 53sec. Debham (Farland) and Boomerang (Wilson) both went well in recording lmin 29 3-ssec for the same distance, the last half-mile in 52.3-5 sec.

Sardius (G, Humphries), one of the b 'st track horses at Hastings, wentattractively over five furlongs in lmin 3sec, the last half-mile in 50 2-ssec, A little later Fulojoy (Farland) catne out and ran the distance in lmin 2 2-ssec, the last half-mile in 50sec, revealing that the mare is coming back steadily to foim.

Cricket (Wilson) "was- a head in front of Darecourt (Nicolson) at the end of six furlongs in lmin 17sec, the last half-mile in 52sec. Liane (B. E. Edwards) and Sea. Wrack (Farland) recorded exactly the same figures, with Liane half a length to the good passing the post. Caen (Shields) and Tiger' Gain (Jones) ran six' furlongs together in lmin 17 2-ssec, the last half-mile in 52sec, and Caen was still going on, though she stops so often in her races. Hine Ra (Wilson) came down from the three furlongs in 38 2-sse.q. . , ...

Rona Bay and Argentic were to. have galloped a mile together later on in the morning, but Argentic did not put in ah appearance till well into the forenoon. . ■

Several, two-year-olds were sharpened up or cantered down the half-mile straight on the course proper. The only real trial was one. in which Cute Melody, Jolly, Mother-in-Law, and Nuclei were associated, Jolly.. making the running till the .last furlong, when Cute Melody finished fast to defeat the leader, by half a length. Accomplice and Illyria, Happy Heels and Brunhilde, Elanage and Aureus, Greenwich (alone), and Hine Ata and Screamer were others to run down from the half-mile for experience. .

Youssipof (E. Burgess) was schooled over four hurdles, and he rapped the first and whacked the third. He hit the third so hard that it pulled him up to a walk, but he went on to.jump the fourth fence cleanly. He runs in the flat on,the first day, but will probably go back to hurdling on the later days. Missal and Icing are both stated.to be unlikely runners, on Thursday. Missal has recently had a cold. Free Gold is definitely not to start on. the first day. ■■'•'■•.- .'■'.' The riding of some of T.-R. Georges horses has not yet been actually fixed, but jockeys:have been secured for the races in which there are more than one candidate. In the Wainui Handicap Wilson will ride either Boomerang or Deficit. In the Rimutaka Handicap Wilson will be on Debham, It. W. Savage on either Hine Ra or Sea: Wrack, and Farland probably on the other. In the Shorts Handicap Wilson be : on Fulojoy or Omarere and Savage on the other. Savage's remaining engagements are Shy, Cute Melody, Werohia, and Greenwich. .■■•■.-; ■ Rpna Bay has no definite, rider yet, but there is a possibility that, Sunee will not start on the first.day, and that would leave C Goulsbro' free to take the mount. Goulsbro' will also be on Brunhiide, B, H. Morris probably on Happy Heels, J. McCauley.on Mother-in-Law, and. J. Leach, on Aureus. ■ . . ■
