MANILA, October 16.

President Quezon today blamed false Government economy for the heavy loss of life in the recent typhoon and subsequent floods. The known dead are now 546, and there is little hope for the 1045 who are missing. .. President Quezon said that the Government had been/ so anxious to maintain a surplus in the Treasury that it hid failed to maintain important dykes, which could have been kept in order for 50,000 dollars a year. Now it would cost 500,000 dollars to repair the damaged dykes. He promised that.work would start immediately.
