TRAMWAY SERVICES

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—The rise in the fares has made the users of our trams more critical of them than ever. I use the trams going to and coming from the city daily, and these trams are the coldest, bleakest, and most uncomfortable of all my experience. And then the noise. One of our recent visitors from overseas on his leavetaking after visiting the South Island said to me that the racket, crunching, jangle of our tramway systems in the principal cities was most obtrusive and nerve-racking. He was surprised that citizens endured it. For the credit of Wellington I pointed out that the Mayor, who has an up-to-date and advanced conception of what is wanted in our city transport service, had recently said that the City Council was dubious whether to stick to trams or to take up motor or trolley buses. He had found that buses cost less to install, All they wanted was a good road and one of the recent types, the Mayor said, was absolutely silent. ' "If the tramways were worn out they could be scrapped next day." I therefore assured our overseas visitor that it would only be a few years and the noise and discomfort of our tram system would be but memories of the past. Christchurch has proved that motor and trolley buses are more economical than trams. With the advanced views held by our City Council, it is not to be supposed that any more tramtracks will be laid in or anywhere about Wellington.—l am, etc.,

PROGRESS.
