WEEKEND EXCURSIONS

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—Now that the majority of people are working the 40-ho;;r week, and as Labour Day weekend will be free from Friday night till Tuesday morning, I wonder if the Railway Department has considered the prospects of an excursion to Auckland at that time? I am of the. belief that such a long weekend would spell success to the venture.—l am, etc., " EXCURSIONIST. [In reply to "Excursionist's" J-::ter the Railway Department states that owing to the very heavy passenger traffic anticipated for the Labour Day weekend holiday by the train services already arranged, it would not be possible to provide passenger rplling-stock for a weekend excursion to Auckland at that time. A very full programme of train services has been arranged to meet the i-equirsments of sporting, picnic, and general holiday travel at the Labour Day weekend. The ordinary services have Deen strengthened, and many additional trains are to be provided, including some long-distance weekend excursions. So pressing, however, is the demand for accommodation that it may be found necessary to restrict the bookings on some of the long-dis-tance excursions. It is the Department's custom to run weekend excursions to Auckland at convenient intervals v and at such times as ample passenger rolling-stock is available. In this connection it might be mentioned that it is intended to arrange a weekend excursion to Auckland at an early date.] ■.-.;'/'■:.- '■;' . ■■ . ■■~ :
