MOTHERS AND SONS

SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION

More than 200 were present at the "Mother and Son" function conducted by the boys' division of the V.M.C.A. on Saturday night. A varied and interesting programme was drawn up, and there was no doubt about the success of the function. '

The chairman was Mr. G. I. B. Thomas, who welcomed the guests. In the training of boys, he said, parents played an important part, and such functions as. these gave the V.M.C.A. workers an opportunity of meeting the parents of the boys they, were assisting to train.

Each boy present introduced his mother, after which Don Niven welcomed the mothers on behalf of the boys.

The value of such gatherings was stressed by the Rev. Percy Paris, who said he owed the beginning of religion in his life" to his mother and the beginning of his education to his grandmother.

Mr. Justice Ostler, who recently returned from a visit to South Africa, gave an interesting address on his experiences in that country. He described in detail the route he and his wife took on their 16,000-mile trip to Nairobi and back, and made particular reference to the more interesting happenings. His Honour showed a series of motion pictures which he had taken during the tour. .

The secretary (Mr. A. •L. Rounthwaite) paid a tribute to the work of the ladies' auxiliary, and thanked those who had helped to make the, evening, a success. ' . .

During the evening, items were given by Miss W. Aitkeh, Mr". J. Hanha, arid Graham Eteveneaux. Popular items were a turn by a clever Pekingese dog and community singing.

Supper was served by the ladiesauxiliary. .

Burns to the face and shock were suffered by Mrs. E. Jamieson, atv,8.50 a.m. yesterday, when flames burst from a gas oven at which she was working at the Columbia Hotel. She was taken to hospital by the Free Ambulance. ■'
