PAREMATA OPENING
The Wellington yachting season began yesterday with the opening of the Paremata Boating Club, which conducted two races. An overcast sky and a chilly wind did not prevent the attendance of a large crowd at the club's landing stage to see Miss M. Brady, daughter of Mr. F. Brady, the club's patron, break out the pennant. The commodore, Mr. A. Shearer, mentioned that it was the first occasion since the beginning of the club that Mr. Brady had not been present on opening day. He asked all present to join with him in wishing Mr. Brady a speedy recovery from the illness which had kept him away. Mr. Shearer welcomed representatives of other clubs and referred to. the friendly relationships between the clubs and the Wellington Association.
The opinion that the club vyas one of the finest for small boats in -NTew Zealand Was expressed by Mr. P. ScottRamsay, vice-president of the club, who officially opened the season Praise for the sport of yachting was given by Mr. L. G-. Lowry. M.P., who spoke of the need for a profitable use of the greater leisure now enjoyed by many people.
Good wishes to the club were expressed by Mr. T. T. Gough- on behalf of the Banks Peninsula Cruising Club. Mr. C. Hollis.on behalf of the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club, Mr. E. Bird on behatt of the Plimmerton Boating Club, and Mr. A. C. Kellett on behalf of the Evans Bay Yacht and Motor-boat Club.
. Two scratch races held in the morning resulted in a win for the Monica in the first-class centreboarders, with the Miss Josephine, lanthe, and Ko : tuku next, and in a win for the Marie in the Takapuna class, followed by the Wairoa, Twink, and Vanitie.
