MAZIR WINS CUP.

DARGAVILLE'S FIRST DAY

. (By Telegraph.) (Special from "Early Bird.") AUCKLAND, October 17. ; The Dargaville Racing Club's Annual Meeting was opened at Avondale today in fine weather. The track was in good order. There was a large attendance. The totalisator investments were £27,362, as against £17,11910s on the first day last year, an increase ol £10,242 10s. LEFT BUT WINS. At the start of the Nursery Handicap Feldberg whipped round and took no part in the race, and Airam was left eight or ten lengths. However, the latter was up with . Raceline ana British Nation at the distance and then beat them home comfortably. Feldberg cantered over the course. High Star led all the way in the Maiden Handicap, being attended at the home turn by Morning Sun and Valamito. Valamito ran up for second, with Tip Toes, Spearcourt, Free Advice, and Royal Passage almost in line next. The winner paid nearly two centuries on the win machine. Tosh, Dialogue, S'ox Moth, and Strathire were hopelessly left. . ' ■ m i.' Dark Marble outstayed Royal Toast. Hawthorn, and Benighted in the Kaihu. Hack Hurdles, with Lap Up tiring to last. Ruling King dropped his rider at the first hurdle, Mountain Bruce came down at . the second, and AH Irish, when leading with Royal Toast at the six, went down on his haunches and slid through the hurdles panel, smashing it to smithereens. Royal Toast was at a long price on the place totalisator. PLEASING PERFORMANCE. Mazir captured the Dargaville Cup in pleasing style. He was second to last most of the way, he and Gay Talkie tailing the bunch at the home turn, where King Tut led Knight of Australia. Mazir got to the front at the distance and survived all challenges' in handsome fashion. Silver Brier, Knight of Australia, and Gay Talkie went over the line together for the' minor placings. . Three lengths away was Master Brierly, and Horowhenua was another two lengths on. Gay Talkie came oh the scene very late and was acttilly doing best of the placed division on the post. Kilonsoa put up a fine performance in the Toka Toka Hack Handicap for, after being ridden in behind, she was on the outside of three horses crossing the top. Over the last bit she went right away. Surella made play right to the distance from Paso Robles ana looked certain to be second when his rider let up and Paso Robles headed him on the post. Lady Diana was a moderate fourth, and Solo Song and Blue Needle headed the others. The winner is improving all the time, ana she promises to do well this season. FAVOURITE UNLUCKY. Tray Bit, the favourite for the Avoca Handicap, got away very badly; fatar Artist going to the front. Both Gay Defence and Tin Lap were knocked back crossing the top, and Sebrof ran up to Star Artist, the pair being clear of Gay Defence and Triune at the home turn, Star Artist easily held oH Triune and the outsider Mangukaha m the run to the post. Tray Bit was only a head away fourth, with Sebrof and Solaria following. Star Artist is now coming back to her best and her win price was surprisingly good after her Ellerslie showing. Tray Bit is undoubtedly unlucky. ■ Crooning improved on her Ellerslie running to win the Hobson Handicap convincingly. She ran up to the pacemaker, Wait and See, crossing the top, and Lucidus was handy at the home turn, where the last two were Tybalt and Keith Lu. Once in line Crooning asserted herself to win nicely from Wait and See, with Light Comedy and Tybalt running-on close up. Bonny Gay, Lucidus, Roman Mascot, and Nun Nicer were next. ' ■ Lornacre scored handsomely in the final event, the Awakirio Hack Handicap, in which Mainland was once again reverted to second placing. Whirlmint, last half a mile from home, came fast on the outside for third money. Jewelled Girdle, who was made too much use of, was a good fourth, just ahead of a bunch comprising Valrent, Dutch Girl, Orac, and High Quality. ; RESULTS IN DETAIL.
