INTERESTING DISPLAY

RONGOTAI COLLEGE EFFORT

Rongotai College was the scene of much activity recently when a display of art, needlework, and handcraft was held. The display,, which was cvganised by Mrs. A. J. Heron, assisted by Mesdames Bruce, Wall, McKane, Wallace, Teward, Dudson, and Bell, was an excellent one, and attracted a large number of parents and friends of the college. Most branches of needlework were in evidence—tapestry, crochet, knitting, and embroidery. A competition' was held for the best embroidered apron, and Miss K. Stone, the judge, had considerable difficulty in deciding . the winner. The first prize (donated by Mrs. Wray), was won by Mrs. Bramley, and the second (donated by Mrs. Willing) went to Mrs. Eaton.

The display, was officially opened at 2.30 by Mrs. Knox Gilmer, a member of the Board of Governors of the college. Mrs. Bruce (president of the Ladies' Auxiliary) expressed her pleasure at seeing so'many pare'rits; of the college present, and .also thanked Mrs. Gilmer for her interest in the exhibition. . Mrs. Heron thanked all those who had so willingly lent their beautiful work, without which the display would have been imposisble. She then presented Mrs. Clilmer with a bouquet done in the college colours.

Mrs. Knox Gilmer was warmly received when she rose to reply. She said that despite the fact that she had had to abandon a beautiful day in her garden the display was of so interesting a character that she felt more than repaid. It had been said that the women of the Dominion could not cook, but it was obvioOs that they could sew, and after viewing the goods on the cake stall she was not prepared to subscribe to the opinion that their cooking left much to be desired. She congratulated the organiser on her very original idea, and as a member of the Board of Governors she eulogised the work of the Ladies' Auxiliary.

Mr. F. Martyn Renner, headmaster of the college, accompanied by Mrs. Renner, added his thanks and appreciation. A delicious afternoon tea was served by Mrs. Teward, and during the evening incidental music was rendered by the college orchestra under Mr. E. Meier. . ;
