CENTRAL W.C.T.U.

Mrs. J. C. Webb presided at the September meeting of the Wellington Cen-tral-branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. A request was received from the New Zealand "No More War Movement" asking for support for their proposals to be presented to the Government. The movement's proposals received sympathetic consideration. As the Wellington Central branch will be the hostesses for the annual district convention at the Y.W.C.A., Mrs. Hoult consented to be the tea convener, and Mesdames Hurst, Davidson, Empson, and Free were appointed a committee for the social evening in the Constable Street room. Mesdames Davidson and Turner were appointed delegates to the convention. It was reported that Mesdames WelJon and Davidson had visited the Victoria Hospital regularly, and that the patients were very pleased to have visitors. ■• , , In order to raise funds for the headquarters the president reported that she had prepared a sixpenny temperance calendar. The picture on it is a beautiful one of the Madonna and Child. , , At the October meeting Mesdames Turner, Israel, Hurst, and Davidson will provide a cake stall and members were asked to bring friends. Mrs. Peryman gave an address on the causes underlying women's failure to have done more with the franchise. It was because "According to your faith it shall be unto you" and they had not expected to do more. Any reform that women really wanted would be brought about. Women had not realised the power they have in the education of the children. "Let us think that everything that ought to be done will be done with God's help," said the speaker. Many women could save themselves from a nervous breakdown by going quietly alone for a little while and asking for help and calmness. _ It was reported that the W.C.T.U. (with other societies) had waited on the City Council in connection with drinking at dances. Mesdames Pile and Code gave very enjoyable songs, and a pianoforte duet. The- meeting closed with the pronouncement of the Benediction.
