ST. JOHN AMBULANCE
♦ > HUTT CHURCH PARADE
Hutt Valley members of the St. John Ambulance Association attended a church parade at the Lower Hutt Methodist Church last evening. There were present the Hutt Nursing Division, under Lady Superintendent Sister Wells; the Hutt Railway Ambulance Division, under Divisional Superintendent R. C. Horwell;' the Petone Ambulance Division, under Divisional Superintendent E. A. Zambra; and the cadets under Cadet Officer A. Marshall. Lady Superintendent Mrs. Gaby was also present. A cordial welcome was accorded to the visitors by the Rev. Harold Peat, ■Who gave a brief history of the rise of modern ambulance work, which, he stated,. commenced in France in 1792 under Napoleon, and was recognised in warfare by the Geneva Convention of 1864. The formation of the British Ambulance Division of St. John of Jerusalem in 1878 had been a most important event, and ,the movement had since then made rapid advances. The movement found, said the speaker, its inspiration in the Man of Galilee. The work of the Good Samaritan was unselfish, thorough, and personal, and in this it was a pattern for all Christian service. Part of the teaching of Jesus had been thej equality of all men; Jesus had for ever; struck the word barbarian out of the dictionaries of mankind and had substituted the word brother. During the service the choir, under Mr. C. X Crawford, sang the anthem, "Evening' and' Morning," and *at the close, for the first time, a vesper, the words and music of which were composed by Mr. Crawford, was sung.
