Garden Circle. The Lyceum Club's Garden Circle paid a visit to Mrs. H. W. Lawton's garden at Vogeltown on Saturday afternoon. The garden was much admired by everyone, spring flowers being in full bloom. Mr. H. W. Lawton, F.L.S., gave a most interesting talk on. the latest discoveries in botany. Afternoon tea was served. The secretary, Mrs. McLaren, proposed a vote of thanks to Mr. and Mrs.!Lawton, which was carried unanimously. On leaving each member received a gift of flowers. Hutt Valley W.D.F.UA meeting of the Hutt Valley Women's Division of the Farmers' Union was held in St. Hilda's Hall recently, when the vice-president (Mrs. Collie) presided over a good attendance. Arrangements were made for the annual ball to be held at Taita next month. A demonstration of slipper making was given by Mrs. Williams, and the competition, a vase of spring flowers, was judged by Mrs. Pepper, Mrs. Burrell being first, Mrs. Bentley second. Interesting letters were read from a member who is touring Canadai and from the president, who is visiting the backblocks of the Auckland district. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs. Mumby and Mrs. Gorrie. Tennis Club Opening. The tennis club of the Wellington Girls' College Old Girls' Association held its annual meeting on Saturday. Mrs. Urquhart presided. It was decided to hold the official opening for the season at the College next Saturday. The following officers were elected for the ensuing season:—Captain, Miss Beryl Fairway; secretary, Miss Barbara Basham; committee the Misses Beryl Edwards, Jean Shallcrass, Ngaire Mulligan, and Margaret Churchill. League of Mothers. The Lyall Bay-Kilbirnie branch of the League of Mothers held their monthly meeting recently, the president (Mrs. R. W. B. Young) presiding. The speaker for the afternoon was Mrs. Edie, who gave a delightful talk on Gloria Rawlinson and a reading of some of her works. Mrs. Edie gave a graphic description of her wonderful life and character and expressed the opinion that she is becoming one of New Zealand's most famous authoresses. The president moved a vote of thanks to the speaker. The branch choir entertained by singing two beautiful glees, and Mrs. Blake sang solos. Afternoon tea was served.
